SUMMARY:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival (CTBF)
DESCRIPTION:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival\nREVELATIONS!\n \nThe annual Cape Town Baroque Festival\, presented by the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, will take place from 21 to 24 September 2024. \nThe programming of the 2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival – titled Revelations! – revolves around the idea of concealing and revealing\, which permeates the individual programmes on many different levels. \nIn the award winning ‘Variations’ programme (Event 1) the focus is on sets of variations or divisions that are built on thematic material originating from songs or hymns. Often the elaborations on the themes in these compositions became so intricate that the encoded themes were obscured\, and are not recognisable on first hearing. These layers will be revealed in a very expressive way in the programme! \nIn a very exciting\, and possibly first South African\, performance of French allegorical late 17th century mini-opera ‘Les arts florissants’ by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (Event 2)\, we explore the idea of a first live hearing of a historical piece presented to a modern audience: early music experienced as new music. This also serves as a reminder that during the Baroque period works were not so often re-performed as in modern-day concert practice\, and that audiences were mostly exposed to newly composed works during concerts. In the opera\, the characters Music\, Poetry\, Painting and Architecture resolve a dispute between Peace and Discord. \nThe ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme (Event 3) will focus on Vivaldi and the performances at the Ospedale della Pietà\, where the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. This obscuring of the performers added a level of mystery to these performances\, which contributed to it becoming a very popular tourist attraction during the 18th century. The concert will take place in the SA Sendinggestigmuseum where the tables will be turned: with the musicians on the lofts and the audience on ground level! \nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Event 3: Venice\, Vivaldi and the Ospedale della Pietà
DESCRIPTION:The Ospedale della Pietà was an orphanage-convent in Venice that was one of four so-called “Ospedali Grandi” (charitable hospices\, which provided a wide range of services for the needy of Venice). In these institutions\, music played an important part in the education of the inhabitants (all girls in the case of the Ospedale della Pietà). By the 18th century\, the Ospedale della Pietà was well-known for its all-female ensemble of singers and instrumentalists\, and the music performances attracted visitors and tourists from across Europe. Vivaldi first became involved with the Pietà as violin teacher in 1703 and held various positions at this institution during his lifetime\, notably between 1723 to 1740. Much of Vivaldi’s sacred vocal and instrumental music was written for performance at the Ospedale della Pietà. \n‘I have not an idea of anything so voluptuous and affecting as this music; the richness of the art\, the exquisite taste of the vocal part\, the excellence of the voices\, the justness of the execution\, everything in these delightful concerts concurs to produce an impression which certainly is not the mode\, but from which I am of opinion no heart is secure.’ – Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s description from 1770 of music-making at the Ospedale della Pietà \nFrom other accounts we know that the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel of the Ospedale della Pietà and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. For the ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme\, the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra will present a selection of works that were written for\, and performed at\, the Ospedale della Pietà\, as well as works by Vivaldi’s Venetian contemporaries\, with all the musicians on the lofts of the SA Sendinggestig Museum in 40 Long Street\, Cape Town. \nCome get a sense of what music making in bustling Venice during Vivaldi’s lifetime might have sounded like\, and join us in paying homage to the mostly unacknowledged women and girls who were the musicians in the Ospedale della Pietà. \nWith: Ingo Müller (baroque oboe)\, Elsabé Richter (soprano)\, Lusibalwethu Sesanti (mezzo-soprano/drag artist)\, The Cape Town Baroque Trio\, Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar \nProgramme duration:\n60 minutes (without interval). A pre-concert talk will be delivered by Anna Stoddard an hour before the performance. \nProgramme to include:\nTomaso Albinoni (1671–1751)\, Oboe Concerto in Bb major\, Op.7\, No.3\nAntonio Vivaldi (1678–1741)\, Laudate pueri\, RV601\nVivaldi\, Concerto for strings\, RV127\nVivaldi\, Trio Sonata in D minor\, Op.1\, No. 12\, ‘La Follia’\nAnna Bon (1738–after 1769)\, Trio Sonata in G major\, Op.111\, Nr.1 \nDate: Tuesday\, 24 September\nTime: 16:00. Pre-concert talk at 15:00\nVenue: SA Sendinggestig Museum\, 40 Long Street\nTickets: R250\, R220 (pensioners)\, R100 (students) \nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Messiah study day
DESCRIPTION:In addition to the two performances of Handel’s Messiah on 28 and 30 November in Cape Town and Hermanus respectively\, we are also presenting a Messiah study day on Sunday\, 24 November\, 12:00-15:00 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church\, De Waterkant. The study day will include a historical background to Messiah\, demonstrations by CTBO instrumentalists and Lutesong Consort singers about aspects of period performance\, a background to the alternative versions of certain of the recitatives and arias to be performed (with musical demonstrations)\, as well as a masterclass and demonstration by visiting baroque trumpeter Raphael Pouget. You can view the full programme here. \nStudents and scholars enter for free\, with no prebooking needed. (If you plan on bringing a group of more than ten students/scholars\, please give us a heads-up at info@ctbaroque.co.za.) Tickets for Messiah audience members are R50. Tickets for the general public (not attending one of the two Messiah performances) are R100. \nBOOK HERE\nThis project is generously supported by the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Rupert Musiekstigting\, and Overstrand Kunste/Arts (OAK). A historically informed Messiah performance featuring a large cast of professional singers and instrumentalists is tremendously expensive to produce. Tickets to this and other Cape Town Baroque Orchestra performances are always subsidised by our generous sponsors. If you would like to contribute to this special project beyond your own ticket cost\, please use Quicket’s optional project donation function when you buy your ticket.

SUMMARY:Handel's 'Messiah' - Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:After the first performances of Messiah in Dublin in 1742\, Handel performed the oratorio several times more during his lifetime. For each of these performances\, he adjusted the work according to the singers and instrumentalists available to him – a common practice during the baroque period.  Following the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s (CTBO) reconstruction of the first 1742 Dublin performance at the end of last year\, we will present the work again in November 2024\, this time featuring several of the alternative (and not often heard) versions of arias and choruses. CTBO’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, has specifically selected versions of the arias and recitatives which will position the three soprano soloists as narrators\, guiding the unfolding of the dramatic arch of this oratorio. \nAccording to CTBO’s usual practice\, the orchestra will play on period-appropriate instruments\, consisting of period stringed instruments\, chamber organ\, harpsichord\, theorbo\, baroque oboe\, baroque trumpet\, and calfskin baroque timpani. CTBO will be joined on stage by Lutesong Consort\, an ensemble of 12 professional singers\, who will sing the chorus parts\, with the soloists also forming part of the vocal ensemble.* \nThis smaller setup of instruments and voices gives this work a lighter\, chamber music-like feeling\, which will illuminate the expressive nuances in the music and text. \nThe performance will be directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar. \n*Lutesong Consort\nSoprano: Lynelle Kenned (soloist)\, Elsabé Richter (soloist)\, Louise Howlett (soloist)\nAlto: Lente Louw (soloist)\, Nick de Jager\, Vasti Zeeman-Knoesen\nTenor: Sandile Mabaso (soloist)\, Levi Alexander\, Christiaan Bell\nBass: Conroy Scott (soloist)\, Keaton Manwaring\, Luvo Rasmeni \nBOOK HERE\nPlease also join us during the interval for a complimentary glass of wine. \nThis performance is generously supported by the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Rupert Musiekstigting and Overstrand Kunste/Arts (OAK). SUMMARY:'Alone and Together – The Joy of Polyphony' - the Cape Town Baroque Trio at the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival
DESCRIPTION:This program explores the evolution of polyphony through the Baroque era and earlier\, highlighting the equal importance of every voice in the ensemble. The repertoire will begin with early consort music for three treble viols\, adapted for two violins and one treble viol\, and progress through later works\, culminating in the intricate Three-Part Inventions by J.S. Bach. The pieces chosen emphasize the collaborative nature of polyphonic music\, where no single part takes precedence\, and every voice contributes equally to the whole. \nInterwoven with these ensemble pieces will be solo works for each member\, showcasing individual artistry while maintaining a sense of cohesion with the overall theme. These solo moments include early division music for viol\, examples of early solo violin music\, and a movement from a solo Bach violin work. Carefully placed within the program\, these solos will create a narrative that flows naturally and enriches the audience’s experience. \nThe program is designed to showcase a wide variety of repertoire and identify the pieces that best align with the trio’s vision: To present unique repertoire that emphasizes collaboration\, equality\, and the joy of shared musical expression. The trio consists of seasoned baroque performers\, Annien Shaw\, Ralitza Macheva and Rosamund Roth. With this program the trio aims to bring audiences into the intimate\, interconnected world of polyphonic music while celebrating the individual voices that make it possible. \nThe program will include works by Lupo\, Gibbons\, Guignon\, Bach and Jenkins. Duration: 60 minutes (no interval). \nBOOK HERE

He moved to the United States in 2006 to undertake advanced musical studies and since graduating from Boston University with a Master in Music\, he has been sought after as soloist and chamber musician. \nEarly Music America Magazine has praised Leon’s solo performances as “exquisite… and filled with virtuosity\,” and as well as being a recipient of the American Bach Soloists’ prestigious Goldberg Prize he was a finalist in the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition. He has played in countries across the globe including Canada\, the United Kingdom\, Japan\, and Australia. With a repertoire spanning the gamut from the sixteenth-century virginalists to contemporary harpsichord music\, he has been a featured artist on the international harpsichord-focused series\, Clavecin en Concert in Montreal\, Harpsichord Heaven at the Flint collection in Delaware\, Emmanuel Music in Boston\, and touring concerts with New York State Baroque. His first solo album\, Phantasticus\, represents his versatility in a program of music in the stylus fantasticus by diverse composers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Mr Schelhase has established a distinctive reputation for his compelling interpretations of Bach’s keyboard music. \nHighly in demand as collaborative musician\, Leon has performed and recorded with notable leaders in the Early Music field. He can be heard on the Nimbus label with violinist Libby Walfisch\, a collaboration that resulted in an invitation to perform at King’s Place in London (UK). In 2009\, Mr Schelhase toured Japan with famed conductor Joshua Rifkin in performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion that were described as “epoch-making” in the Japanese press. He has also recorded on the Centaur label with Julianne Baird\, and his most recent release on Acis Records is with the virtuoso wind ensemble Kleine Kammermusik\, of which he is a founding member. As freelance continuo artist\, he has played with both major orchestras and opera companies including the Phoenix Symphony\, Chicago Opera Theatre\, American Bach Soloists\, and Tempesta di Mare\, and with chamber ensembles House of Time (New York)\, Pegasus Early Music (Rochester\, NY)\, Chatham Baroque (Pittsburgh)\, the Boston-based conductorless string orchestra A Far Cry\, and The Philadelphia Bach Festival Orchestra. He has taught masterclasses at George Mason University (VA) and for Aberfoyle Baroque (DC)\, and has served as faculty at the Amherst Early Music Festival and accompaniment fellow at the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. \nLeon holds a BMus (Hons) from the University of Cape Town\, and a Master’s Degree in Historical Performance from Boston University where he studied with Peter Sykes. In 2012\, Leon joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music as harpsichord instructor. \nSarah Cunningham\nSarah Cunningham began her viola da gamba studies in Boston\, where viol player Gian Lyman Silbiger\, as well as legendary teacher and director Marleen Montgomery\, were formative influences\, as were further studies with Wieland Kuijken in the Netherlands. After her move to London in 1981\, she co-founded the ensemble Sonnerie with Monica Huggett and recorded and toured around the world with ensembles including Fretwork\, Phantasm\, Sequentia\, Les Arts Florissant\, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She has performed as a soloist under Simon Rattle\, John Elliott Gardiner\, Trevor Pinnock\, and Gustav Leonhart\, and has recorded on ASV\, Virgin/EMI\, Harmonia Mundi\, Erato\, and Decca. A former faculty member at Hochschule fuer Kuenst in Germany\, the Guildhall School in London\, and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, Cunningham has presented workshops and master classes throughout the world. She was founder and first artistic director of the East Cork Early Music in Ireland and is a founding member of Les Filles de Sainte Colombe. Cunningham has been on the faculty at Juilliard since 2011. \nAnnien Shaw\nDr. Annien Shaw is a soloist\, chamber musician\, baroque violinist and teacher based in Cape Town. She holds a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of Cape Town\, a PGDip and FRSM in solo performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK\, a Masters in Chamber Music from the University of Stellenbosch\, and an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa. \nAnnien is a founding member of the Juliet String Quartet. This quartet actively promotes new South African compositions. In 2023 the Juliet String Quartet released their debut album\, Maike\, consisting of South African compositions\, which was nominated for a SAMA award. Annien is also the founding member of The Flat Mountain Project and as a student of performance practice\, she has a keen interest in artistic research. In 2012 she was awarded a FRSM Diploma from the ABRSM for demonstrating the different uses of neo-classicism in the compositions of Stravinsky and Prokovief. Her PhD research into the fingerings principles of Louis Spohr is intended as a guideline for performance practice. \nShe has been actively involved in the developing Baroque scene in Cape Town as a member of the Cape Consort and a Guest Concert Master and soloist of Cape Town Baroque (CTB). Her interest in baroque violin was sparked by Darragh Morgan and his involvement with the Baroque 2000 group based in KwaZulu Natal in Durban of which she was a member from 2004 to 2009. During her studies at RNCM\, she took baroque violin lessons with Pauline Nobes and upon her return to Cape Town has had many masterclasses with Antoinette Lohmann. SUMMARY:Mrs Philarmonica – a South African Premiere (2025 Cape Town Baroque Festival - EVENT 4)
DESCRIPTION:The Cape Town Baroque Trio presents a programme of music by the early 18th-century English female composer Mrs Philarmonica\, whose actual identity remains unknown up to this day. There are only two extant collections of music composed by her\, both published under the pseudonym ‘Mrs Philarmonica’. In this programme\, compiled by Annien Shaw and consisting of trio sonatas by the ever-elusive Mrs Philarmonica\, we celebrate female composers of the Baroque and bring to light the work of a composer of very expressive and complex music who had been forgotten by history for a long time. \nThis concert will be presented at\, and in collaboration with\, the Irma Stern Museum on the University of Cape Town campus\, thereby emphasising the important contribution\, from the 18th to the 20th century\, of female artists and composers. The Cape Town Baroque Trio consists of three Cape Town Baroque Orchestra section leaders\, namely Annien Shaw (baroque violin)\, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin) and Rosamund Roth (baroque cello)\, who specialise in playing chamber music from the Baroque on period instruments. They will be joined by Erik Dippenaar (spinet). \nDate: Saturday\, 27 September\nTime: 11:00-12:00\nVenue: UCT Irma Stern Museum\, Rosebank\nTickets: R250 (regular)\, R220 (pensioners)\, R100 (learners/students). SUMMARY:BAROQUE KEYS (Event 2 - 2026 Summer Baroque Season) - Cape Town Concert Series collaboration
DESCRIPTION:During 2026\, the Cape Town Concert Series presents a season of concerts focused around its Steinway Grand Piano\, which turns 65 this year and is considered one of the finest recital pianos in the country. \nTo set the scene for this piano-focused season of concerts\, the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, presents a solo recital that takes the audience on a journey through the history of the keyboard instruments that existed before the piano. Dippenaar will play several early keyboard instruments\, including harpsichords in two different styles\, an octave spinetto and a copy of a 16th-century regal. The repertoire ranges from the 1560s until the 1770s\, including popular harpsichord works such as Handel’s Harmonious Blacksmith variations and Couperin’s Les Barricades Mystérieuses\, but also lesser-known pieces that show off the variety of textures and colours of early keyboard instruments.
