SUMMARY:The Misshapen Pearls - A Baroque Story
DESCRIPTION:Camerata Tinta Barocca\, in collaboration with Friends of Orchestral Music and Bowmans\, present The Misshapen Pearls\, a concert exploring the true spirit of the Baroque. The term ‘barocco’\, originally used by 17th century jewellers to describe a misshapen pearl\, was used from the mid-eighteenth century\, when a simpler style of music became popular\, to refer the imperfection\, bizarreness and grotesqueness of music from the Baroque. This programme will focus on the stark contrasts found in Baroque music\, leaning on the idea of chiaroscuro (light-dark)\, as well as exploring the improvisational aspect of music from this period\, which was intrinsically part of the aesthetic. \nThe programme includes music by Castello\, Bertali\, Telemann\, Couperin\, Biber and Hotteterre\, with Vivaldi’s outrageous set of ‘La Folia’ variations as the centrepiece. \nWith Ralitza Macheva and Refiloe Olifant (baroque violins)\, and Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord) \nDate: Sunday\, 20 October 2019\nTime: 18:00\nVenue: Bowmans’ Cape Town Office\, 22 Bree Street \nTickets: R400 / R350 FOM members. Ticket sales via Quicket – click here to purchase tickets.\nEnquiries: To Louise Howlett via email – singingladylouise@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Kunstgeiger und Bierfiedler (Art violinists and Beer fiddlers) - a duo recital with Antoinette Lohmann (baroque violin\, clog violin) and Jörn Boysen (harpsichord\, baroque guitar\, zither\, jewish harp)
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Camerata Tinta Barocca concert series\, international baroque musicians Antoinette Lohmann (baroque violin\, clog violin)\, and Jörn Boysen (harpsichord\, baroque guitar\, zither\, jewish harp) present a duo recital of solo violin literature from the seventeenth century for baroque violin and Dutch clog violin\, juxtaposing folk and art music from the early baroque. \nAntoinette Lohmann (Amsterdam\, 1969) is no stranger to South African audiences – she came to South Africa in 2008 for the first time to teach a masterclass baroque violin\, and this marked the beginning of her regular visits to this country to support the development of its emerging historical performance movement. She has been working together with South-Africa’s leading specialists in historical performance such as John Coulter\, Erik Dippenaar\, Hans Huyssen and Gerhard Benade. She has performed with Camerata Tinta Baroca and Cape Consort (Cape Town)\, Baroque 2000 (Durban). Furthermore she has been teaching masterclasses at the Universities of Cape Town\, Bloemfontein\, Potchefstroom and Pretoria. She is also an Honorary Patron of Camerata Tinta Barocca. She is currently teaching principal study historical violin and viola at the Amsterdam and the Utrecht Conservatory of Music and is also the principal teacher of the Historical Performance Department in Utrecht\, where she also teaches historical documentation. \nJörn Boysen (Lübeck\, 1976) is a harpsichordist\, conductor and composer. After his studies at the Musikhochschule Lübeck he went to the Netherlands where he studied with Tini Mathot and Ton Koopman at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Apart from his work as a performer and composer\, Boysen teaches at the Utrecht Conservatory. SUMMARY:I BASSIFONDI IN CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Istituto Italiano di Cultura’ in collaboration with Camerata Tinta Barocca present Italian ensemble I Bassifondi. A brainchild of Simone Vallerotonda\, I Bassifondi is a period ensemble performing music for lute\, archlute\, theorbo and baroque guitar with continuo. \nMost 17th-18th-century music for lute\, guitar\, theorbo and archlute was devised and written down to be played in consort with different instruments. Such authors as Kapsberger\, Corbetta\, Piccinini\, de Visée\, Granata\, Weiss and many others either composed their solo pieces with an added continuo accompaniment or arranged them from the original tablatures into regular multi-part scores. Moreover\, in some more explicit instances they wrote directly for a consort of lutes\, or for lute and sundry instruments. Several period chronicles witness on how such multi-instrumental music used to be performed. Guitarists were typically expected to be accompanied by theorboes\, colasciones\, lutes – and vice versa. Relying on written testimonies as well as on musical and iconographic sources\, the ensemble I Bassifondi founded and handpicked by Simone Vallerotonda\, aims at rediscovering and offering the audience that repertoire in chamber format. \nThe programme for this concert evokes the musical life of seventeenth century Rome in all its aspects: from the street\, where the storytellers improvised simple dances\, to the oratorio\, where people gathered to hear the sacrae historiae\, to the refined performances at the Palazzo Barberini. Music by Kapsberger (1580-1651)\, Tommaso Marchetti romano (?-XVII)\, Ferdinando Valdambrini romano (?- XVII)\, Giovanni Paolo Foscarini (1600-1647)\, Arcangelo Lori (1611-1679) and Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). \nWith: Gabriele Miracle (percussion)\, Stefano Todarello (colascione\, battente guitar\, sordellina) and Simone Vallerotonda (archlute\, baroque guitar and direction). Local soprano Elsabé Richter will make a guest appearance. \nDate: Wednesday 20 November 2019\nTime: 20.00\nVenue: St. Andrew’s Presbytarian Church\, De Waterkant \nTickets: R160 and R140 (concessions). Tickets can be purchased online via Webtickets\, in-store at any Pick n Pay supermarket or cash at the door. Click here to purchase tickets online.\nEnquiries: Email info@ctbaroque.co.za.

SUMMARY:Salsa Baroque
DESCRIPTION:The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra in collaboration with Ensemble Caprice from Montréal\, Canada\, present Salsa Baroque\, an exciting programme of 17th and 18th century music from Latin America and Spain. \nDuring this time period\, the musical dialogue between the Old and New Worlds produced extraordinary results. The fascinating blend of European polyphony and Latin American traditional music created a unique style that is exemplified by the villancicos of the Bolivian composer Juan de Araujo and the colourful guarachas of his contemporaries. The programme also includes sonatas by Falconieri\, a European composer who was influenced by this Latin American style. \nThese gems from this spectacular musical era will be performed on instruments that were common at the time: flutes and recorders\, baroque guitar\, baroque bowed string instruments\, period keyboards\, and various percussion instruments. \nWith: \nMembers of Ensemble Caprice\nMatthias Maute (recorder\, traverso)\nZiya Tabassian (percussion) \nand \nMembers of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\nRalitza Macheva\, Nicole D’Oliveira (baroque violins)\nLynn Rudolph (baroque viola)\nCheryl de Havilland (baroque cello)\nHenrike Kovats (baroque double bass)\nUwe Grosser (theorbo\, baroque guitar)\nDale de Windt (chamber organ)\nErik Dippenaar (harpsichord) \nFor a sneak preview of Ensemble Caprice’s work\, see their website: https://ensemblecaprice.com/en/ \nDate: Wednesday 10 November\nTime: 19:00 – 20.00\nVenue: St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church\, De Waterkant\nTickets are R180 at Quicket: https://qkt.io/z3KZzu \nSeating is unreserved\, but social distancing protocols will be followed. \nPlease note that no tickets will be sold at the door due to audience size limitations.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Handel: The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra with Lynelle Kenned (soprano) - Greyton Genadendal Classics for All - 22 May
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Handel: The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra with Lynelle Kenned (soprano) \nThe Cape Town Baroque Orchestra presents an exciting programme of vocal and instrumental repertoire\, celebrating the expressiveness and vitality of the music of George Frideric Handel (1685–1759). \nThe centrepiece of the programme is Handel’s Gloria\, sung by Lynelle Kenned. This composition\, which was probably composed very early in Handel’s career\, was lost for many years and only re-discovered in 2001 in the library of the Royal Academy of Music (London).  \nIn addition to the Gloria\, Ingo Müller (baroque oboe) and Annien Shaw (baroque violin) will appear as soloists in Handel’s Concerto Grosso in G major\, op.3 no.3\, and the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, will play the Organ Concerto in F-major\, op.4 no.5. \nMany of Handel’s organ concerti and concerti grossi were written to be performed between the acts of his oratorios. Whilst the keyboard concerto was a new genre of the time\, and centred around Handel as composer-performer\, the concerto grosso harks back to a previous generation\, but was stylistically updated by Handel in several innovative ways. \nProgramme  \nGeorge Frideric Handel (1685–1759): \nOuverture from Rodelinda (1725) \n  \nGloria\, HWV deest \nSoloist: Lynelle Kenned (soprano) \n  \nOrgan Concerto in F major\, op.4 no.5 (1735) \nLarghetto – Allegro – Alla Siciliana – Presto \nSoloist: Erik Dippenaar (chamber organ) \n  \nConcerto Grosso in G major\, op.3 no.3 (1717–1718) \nLargo e Staccato – Allegro – Adagio – Allegro  \nSoloists: Ingo Müller (baroque oboe) and Annien Shaw (baroque violin) \n  \n“Tornami a vagheggiar” from Alcina (1735) \nSoloist: Lynelle Kenned (soprano) \n  \nDate: Sunday\, 22 May 2022 \nTime: 11:30–12.30 \nVenue: Moravian Church\, Genadendal \nTickets are R160 at Computicket: https://tickets.computicket.com/event/cape_town_baroque_orchestra/7182350/7182375/41913 \nFor enquiries\, contact info@classicsforall.co.za or coeniev@gmail.com or visit https://classicsforall.co.za/cape-town-baroque-orchestra/

SUMMARY:The Four Nations – Cape Town Baroque Orchestra with Matthias Maute (recorder/traverso)
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Vivaldi’s cycle of descriptive violin concertos\, “The Four Seasons”\, counts among the most famous music ever devised. However\, another cycle of four recorder concertos with descriptive titles by the same composer has remained in (relative) obscurity\, namely: \n\nConcerto La Francia (France)\nConcerto La Spagna (Spain)\nConcerto L’Inghilterro (England)\nConcerto Il Gran Mogol (India)\n\nThe three concertos La Francia\, La Spagna\, L’Inghilterro and the original version of Il Gran Mogul are unfortunately lost. \nThe Cape Town Baroque Orchestra is happy to present Matthias Maute’s reconstruction of these four concerti\, with the virtuoso Maute himself as soloist. Each concerto is preceded by a prelude composed in the country that the ensuing concerto is dedicated to. \nDate: Sunday\, 23 October \nTime: 16:00  \nVenue: South African Sendinggestigmuseum\, 40 Long Street\, Cape Town. \nTickets: R220 at Quicket

SUMMARY:Angels and Shepherds: A German Baroque Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra in collaboration with the Lutesong Consort will present a concert of festive Christmas music by German Baroque composers for 8 solo voices and chamber orchestra. \nThe contrast between the immense significance of the Incarnation and its humble pastoral setting has always been a rich source of inspiration for artists and composers alike\, and serves as a poignant reminder of our fragile human state and our humility when faced by such mystery. We will highlight this contrast with a special mix of jubilation\, magnificence\, serene simplicity and tenderness in the Nativity repertoire by\, amongst others\, Hammerschmidt\, Schütz\, Praetorius\, Buxtehude and Johann Christoph Bach. \n7 December\, 19:00–20:30\nSt Andrews Presbyterian Church\, Somerset Road\, De Waterkant\nTickets (R200\, R180) available on Quicket\nFor more information\, email info@ctbaroque.co.za

SUMMARY:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival (CTBF)
DESCRIPTION:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival\nREVELATIONS!\n \nThe annual Cape Town Baroque Festival\, presented by the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, will take place from 21 to 24 September 2024. \nThe programming of the 2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival – titled Revelations! – revolves around the idea of concealing and revealing\, which permeates the individual programmes on many different levels. \nIn the award winning ‘Variations’ programme (Event 1) the focus is on sets of variations or divisions that are built on thematic material originating from songs or hymns. Often the elaborations on the themes in these compositions became so intricate that the encoded themes were obscured\, and are not recognisable on first hearing. These layers will be revealed in a very expressive way in the programme! \nIn a very exciting\, and possibly first South African\, performance of French allegorical late 17th century mini-opera ‘Les arts florissants’ by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (Event 2)\, we explore the idea of a first live hearing of a historical piece presented to a modern audience: early music experienced as new music. This also serves as a reminder that during the Baroque period works were not so often re-performed as in modern-day concert practice\, and that audiences were mostly exposed to newly composed works during concerts. In the opera\, the characters Music\, Poetry\, Painting and Architecture resolve a dispute between Peace and Discord. \nThe ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme (Event 3) will focus on Vivaldi and the performances at the Ospedale della Pietà\, where the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. This obscuring of the performers added a level of mystery to these performances\, which contributed to it becoming a very popular tourist attraction during the 18th century. The concert will take place in the SA Sendinggestigmuseum where the tables will be turned: with the musicians on the lofts and the audience on ground level! \nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Event 3: Venice\, Vivaldi and the Ospedale della Pietà
DESCRIPTION:The Ospedale della Pietà was an orphanage-convent in Venice that was one of four so-called “Ospedali Grandi” (charitable hospices\, which provided a wide range of services for the needy of Venice). In these institutions\, music played an important part in the education of the inhabitants (all girls in the case of the Ospedale della Pietà). By the 18th century\, the Ospedale della Pietà was well-known for its all-female ensemble of singers and instrumentalists\, and the music performances attracted visitors and tourists from across Europe. Vivaldi first became involved with the Pietà as violin teacher in 1703 and held various positions at this institution during his lifetime\, notably between 1723 to 1740. Much of Vivaldi’s sacred vocal and instrumental music was written for performance at the Ospedale della Pietà. \n‘I have not an idea of anything so voluptuous and affecting as this music; the richness of the art\, the exquisite taste of the vocal part\, the excellence of the voices\, the justness of the execution\, everything in these delightful concerts concurs to produce an impression which certainly is not the mode\, but from which I am of opinion no heart is secure.’ – Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s description from 1770 of music-making at the Ospedale della Pietà \nFrom other accounts we know that the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel of the Ospedale della Pietà and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. For the ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme\, the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra will present a selection of works that were written for\, and performed at\, the Ospedale della Pietà\, as well as works by Vivaldi’s Venetian contemporaries\, with all the musicians on the lofts of the SA Sendinggestig Museum in 40 Long Street\, Cape Town. \nCome get a sense of what music making in bustling Venice during Vivaldi’s lifetime might have sounded like\, and join us in paying homage to the mostly unacknowledged women and girls who were the musicians in the Ospedale della Pietà. \nWith: Ingo Müller (baroque oboe)\, Elsabé Richter (soprano)\, Lusibalwethu Sesanti (mezzo-soprano/drag artist)\, The Cape Town Baroque Trio\, Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar \nProgramme duration:\n60 minutes (without interval). A pre-concert talk will be delivered by Anna Stoddard an hour before the performance. \nProgramme to include:\nTomaso Albinoni (1671–1751)\, Oboe Concerto in Bb major\, Op.7\, No.3\nAntonio Vivaldi (1678–1741)\, Laudate pueri\, RV601\nVivaldi\, Concerto for strings\, RV127\nVivaldi\, Trio Sonata in D minor\, Op.1\, No. 12\, ‘La Follia’\nAnna Bon (1738–after 1769)\, Trio Sonata in G major\, Op.111\, Nr.1 \nDate: Tuesday\, 24 September\nTime: 16:00. Pre-concert talk at 15:00\nVenue: SA Sendinggestig Museum\, 40 Long Street\nTickets: R250\, R220 (pensioners)\, R100 (students) \nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Messiah study day
DESCRIPTION:In addition to the two performances of Handel’s Messiah on 28 and 30 November in Cape Town and Hermanus respectively\, we are also presenting a Messiah study day on Sunday\, 24 November\, 12:00-15:00 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church\, De Waterkant. The study day will include a historical background to Messiah\, demonstrations by CTBO instrumentalists and Lutesong Consort singers about aspects of period performance\, a background to the alternative versions of certain of the recitatives and arias to be performed (with musical demonstrations)\, as well as a masterclass and demonstration by visiting baroque trumpeter Raphael Pouget. You can view the full programme here. \nStudents and scholars enter for free\, with no prebooking needed. (If you plan on bringing a group of more than ten students/scholars\, please give us a heads-up at info@ctbaroque.co.za.) Tickets for Messiah audience members are R50. Tickets for the general public (not attending one of the two Messiah performances) are R100. \nBOOK HERE\nThis project is generously supported by the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Rupert Musiekstigting\, and Overstrand Kunste/Arts (OAK). A historically informed Messiah performance featuring a large cast of professional singers and instrumentalists is tremendously expensive to produce. Tickets to this and other Cape Town Baroque Orchestra performances are always subsidised by our generous sponsors. If you would like to contribute to this special project beyond your own ticket cost\, please use Quicket’s optional project donation function when you buy your ticket.

SUMMARY:Handel's 'Messiah' - Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:After the first performances of Messiah in Dublin in 1742\, Handel performed the oratorio several times more during his lifetime. For each of these performances\, he adjusted the work according to the singers and instrumentalists available to him – a common practice during the baroque period.  Following the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s (CTBO) reconstruction of the first 1742 Dublin performance at the end of last year\, we will present the work again in November 2024\, this time featuring several of the alternative (and not often heard) versions of arias and choruses. CTBO’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, has specifically selected versions of the arias and recitatives which will position the three soprano soloists as narrators\, guiding the unfolding of the dramatic arch of this oratorio. \nAccording to CTBO’s usual practice\, the orchestra will play on period-appropriate instruments\, consisting of period stringed instruments\, chamber organ\, harpsichord\, theorbo\, baroque oboe\, baroque trumpet\, and calfskin baroque timpani. CTBO will be joined on stage by Lutesong Consort\, an ensemble of 12 professional singers\, who will sing the chorus parts\, with the soloists also forming part of the vocal ensemble.* \nThis smaller setup of instruments and voices gives this work a lighter\, chamber music-like feeling\, which will illuminate the expressive nuances in the music and text. \nThe performance will be directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar. \n*Lutesong Consort\nSoprano: Lynelle Kenned (soloist)\, Elsabé Richter (soloist)\, Louise Howlett (soloist)\nAlto: Lente Louw (soloist)\, Nick de Jager\, Vasti Zeeman-Knoesen\nTenor: Sandile Mabaso (soloist)\, Levi Alexander\, Christiaan Bell\nBass: Conroy Scott (soloist)\, Keaton Manwaring\, Luvo Rasmeni \nBOOK HERE\nPlease also join us during the interval for a complimentary glass of wine. \nThis performance is generously supported by the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Rupert Musiekstigting and Overstrand Kunste/Arts (OAK).
