DESCRIPTION:The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra (CTBO) presents their Summer Baroque Season of three concerts in February 2025 in various venues across Cape Town. BOOK YOUR SEASON PASS HERE\, or scroll down for individual booking links. \n*** \nIn two repeat performances of the award-winning ‘Variations’ programme (Event 1) on Saturday 1 February\, the focus is on sets of variations or divisions that are built on thematic material originating from songs or hymns\, performed by Lynelle Kenned (soprano)\, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin) and the CTBO’s Artistic Director Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord)\, in the atmospheric Weltevreden chapel in Noordhoek. BOOK HERE \nIn ‘String concerti\, plus a suite or two!’ (Event 2) on 12 February\, we welcome two baroque violin soloists\, Julia Wedman and Cristina Prats-Costa\, from Toronto\, Canada. Julia is also a member of the renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. They will lead us in a varied programme of orchestral repertoire in both the Italian and French baroque styles at our home venue\, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in De Waterkant. SUMMARY:'Le Monde du Clavecin' - a solo recital with John Reid Coulter (harpsichord)
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 9 April at 19:00\, John Reid Coulter will present a solo harpsichord recital which promises to transport audiences into the expressive soundworld of mid-18th century repertoire for solo keyboard. Join him at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in De Waterkant\, Cape Town to experience a rich variety of works by the Couperin family\, Jean-Philippe Rameau\, Jacques Duphly\, Louis Marchant and Claude Balbastre\, whose works range from expressive free-form preludes to quirky social commentary pieces offering us glimpses into the sophisticated humour and social complexities at the French court. He will also sojourn into the Iberian Peninsula for works by seldom-heard Portuguese and Spanish composers Carlos Seixas\, João de Sousa Carvalhos and Antonio Soler\, as well as works by Domenico Scarlatti\, who was employed at the Spanish court. \nThe concert will be narrated by Anna Stoddard\, well-known presenter of ‘Anna’s Baroque Bon Bons’ on Fine Music Radio. SUMMARY:'Alone and Together – The Joy of Polyphony' - the Cape Town Baroque Trio at the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival
DESCRIPTION:This program explores the evolution of polyphony through the Baroque era and earlier\, highlighting the equal importance of every voice in the ensemble. The repertoire will begin with early consort music for three treble viols\, adapted for two violins and one treble viol\, and progress through later works\, culminating in the intricate Three-Part Inventions by J.S. Bach. The pieces chosen emphasize the collaborative nature of polyphonic music\, where no single part takes precedence\, and every voice contributes equally to the whole. \nInterwoven with these ensemble pieces will be solo works for each member\, showcasing individual artistry while maintaining a sense of cohesion with the overall theme. These solo moments include early division music for viol\, examples of early solo violin music\, and a movement from a solo Bach violin work. Carefully placed within the program\, these solos will create a narrative that flows naturally and enriches the audience’s experience. \nThe program is designed to showcase a wide variety of repertoire and identify the pieces that best align with the trio’s vision: To present unique repertoire that emphasizes collaboration\, equality\, and the joy of shared musical expression. The trio consists of seasoned baroque performers\, Annien Shaw\, Ralitza Macheva and Rosamund Roth. Click here to see the full programme. \nWith: Annien Shaw (baroque violin)\, Sarah Cunningham (viola da gamba)\, and Leon Schelhase (harpsichord). \nPlease join us for a complimentary glass of wine after the concert. \nBOOK HERE\nAbout the players:\nLeon Schelhase\nA native of Cape Town\, South Africa\, Leon Schelhase\, found himself resonating with Baroque music from an early age. He moved to the United States in 2006 to undertake advanced musical studies and since graduating from Boston University with a Master in Music\, he has been sought after as soloist and chamber musician. \nEarly Music America Magazine has praised Leon’s solo performances as “exquisite… and filled with virtuosity\,” and as well as being a recipient of the American Bach Soloists’ prestigious Goldberg Prize he was a finalist in the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition. He has played in countries across the globe including Canada\, the United Kingdom\, Japan\, and Australia. With a repertoire spanning the gamut from the sixteenth-century virginalists to contemporary harpsichord music\, he has been a featured artist on the international harpsichord-focused series\, Clavecin en Concert in Montreal\, Harpsichord Heaven at the Flint collection in Delaware\, Emmanuel Music in Boston\, and touring concerts with New York State Baroque. His first solo album\, Phantasticus\, represents his versatility in a program of music in the stylus fantasticus by diverse composers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Mr Schelhase has established a distinctive reputation for his compelling interpretations of Bach’s keyboard music. \nHighly in demand as collaborative musician\, Leon has performed and recorded with notable leaders in the Early Music field. He can be heard on the Nimbus label with violinist Libby Walfisch\, a collaboration that resulted in an invitation to perform at King’s Place in London (UK). In 2009\, Mr Schelhase toured Japan with famed conductor Joshua Rifkin in performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion that were described as “epoch-making” in the Japanese press. He has also recorded on the Centaur label with Julianne Baird\, and his most recent release on Acis Records is with the virtuoso wind ensemble Kleine Kammermusik\, of which he is a founding member. As freelance continuo artist\, he has played with both major orchestras and opera companies including the Phoenix Symphony\, Chicago Opera Theatre\, American Bach Soloists\, and Tempesta di Mare\, and with chamber ensembles House of Time (New York)\, Pegasus Early Music (Rochester\, NY)\, Chatham Baroque (Pittsburgh)\, the Boston-based conductorless string orchestra A Far Cry\, and The Philadelphia Bach Festival Orchestra. He has taught masterclasses at George Mason University (VA) and for Aberfoyle Baroque (DC)\, and has served as faculty at the Amherst Early Music Festival and accompaniment fellow at the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. \nLeon holds a BMus (Hons) from the University of Cape Town\, and a Master’s Degree in Historical Performance from Boston University where he studied with Peter Sykes. In 2012\, Leon joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music as harpsichord instructor. \nSarah Cunningham\nSarah Cunningham began her viola da gamba studies in Boston\, where viol player Gian Lyman Silbiger\, as well as legendary teacher and director Marleen Montgomery\, were formative influences\, as were further studies with Wieland Kuijken in the Netherlands. After her move to London in 1981\, she co-founded the ensemble Sonnerie with Monica Huggett and recorded and toured around the world with ensembles including Fretwork\, Phantasm\, Sequentia\, Les Arts Florissant\, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She has performed as a soloist under Simon Rattle\, John Elliott Gardiner\, Trevor Pinnock\, and Gustav Leonhart\, and has recorded on ASV\, Virgin/EMI\, Harmonia Mundi\, Erato\, and Decca. A former faculty member at Hochschule fuer Kuenst in Germany\, the Guildhall School in London\, and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, Cunningham has presented workshops and master classes throughout the world. She was founder and first artistic director of the East Cork Early Music in Ireland and is a founding member of Les Filles de Sainte Colombe. Cunningham has been on the faculty at Juilliard since 2011. \nAnnien Shaw\nDr. Annien Shaw is a soloist\, chamber musician\, baroque violinist and teacher based in Cape Town. She holds a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of Cape Town\, a PGDip and FRSM in solo performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK\, a Masters in Chamber Music from the University of Stellenbosch\, and an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa. \nAnnien is a founding member of the Juliet String Quartet. This quartet actively promotes new South African compositions. In 2023 the Juliet String Quartet released their debut album\, Maike\, consisting of South African compositions\, which was nominated for a SAMA award. Annien is also the founding member of The Flat Mountain Project and as a student of performance practice\, she has a keen interest in artistic research. In 2012 she was awarded a FRSM Diploma from the ABRSM for demonstrating the different uses of neo-classicism in the compositions of Stravinsky and Prokovief. Her PhD research into the fingerings principles of Louis Spohr is intended as a guideline for performance practice. \nShe has been actively involved in the developing Baroque scene in Cape Town as a member of the Cape Consort and a Guest Concert Master and soloist of Cape Town Baroque (CTB). Her interest in baroque violin was sparked by Darragh Morgan and his involvement with the Baroque 2000 group based in KwaZulu Natal in Durban of which she was a member from 2004 to 2009. During her studies at RNCM\, she took baroque violin lessons with Pauline Nobes and upon her return to Cape Town has had many masterclasses with Antoinette Lohmann. Annien is a regular attendant of the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute where she receives classes from Julia Wedman.

DESCRIPTION:The Cape Town Baroque Trio presents a programme of music by the early 18th-century English female composer Mrs Philarmonica\, whose actual identity remains unknown up to this day. There are only two extant collections of music composed by her\, both published under the pseudonym ‘Mrs Philarmonica’. In this programme\, compiled by Annien Shaw and consisting of trio sonatas by the ever-elusive Mrs Philarmonica\, we celebrate female composers of the Baroque and bring to light the work of a composer of very expressive and complex music who had been forgotten by history for a long time. \nThis concert will be presented at\, and in collaboration with\, the Irma Stern Museum on the University of Cape Town campus\, thereby emphasising the important contribution\, from the 18th to the 20th century\, of female artists and composers. The Cape Town Baroque Trio consists of three Cape Town Baroque Orchestra section leaders\, namely Annien Shaw (baroque violin)\, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin) and Rosamund Roth (baroque cello)\, who specialise in playing chamber music from the Baroque on period instruments. The 2025 Cape Town Baroque Festival’s international visiting baroque specialists\, Zefira Valova (baroque violin) and Erik Bosgraaf (recorder\, chalumeau\, harpsichord)\, will perform as soloists in this concert alongside local players Ralitza Macheva and Annien Shaw (baroque violins) and David Cyster (chalumeau). A high point in the programme will be the young South African clarinettist David Cyster\, who recently started learning the chalumeau (the historical version of the modern clarinet)\, performing in a double concerto for two chalumeaux with Erik Bosgraaf\, who will direct the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra in this programme of double concerti and orchestral works by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767). DESCRIPTION:During 2026\, the Cape Town Concert Series presents a season of concerts focused around its Steinway Grand Piano\, which turns 65 this year and is considered one of the finest recital pianos in the country. \nTo set the scene for this piano-focused season of concerts\, the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, presents a solo recital that takes the audience on a journey through the history of the keyboard instruments that existed before the piano. Dippenaar will play several early keyboard instruments\, including harpsichords in two different styles\, an octave spinetto and a copy of a 16th-century regal. The repertoire ranges from the 1560s until the 1770s\, including popular harpsichord works such as Handel’s Harmonious Blacksmith variations and Couperin’s Les Barricades Mystérieuses\, but also lesser-known pieces that show off the variety of textures and colours of early keyboard instruments.
