SUMMARY:The Misshapen Pearls - A Baroque Story
DESCRIPTION:Camerata Tinta Barocca\, in collaboration with Friends of Orchestral Music and Bowmans\, present The Misshapen Pearls\, a concert exploring the true spirit of the Baroque. The term ‘barocco’\, originally used by 17th century jewellers to describe a misshapen pearl\, was used from the mid-eighteenth century\, when a simpler style of music became popular\, to refer the imperfection\, bizarreness and grotesqueness of music from the Baroque. DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Camerata Tinta Barocca concert series\, international baroque musicians Antoinette Lohmann (baroque violin\, clog violin)\, and Jörn Boysen (harpsichord\, baroque guitar\, zither\, jewish harp) present a duo recital of solo violin literature from the seventeenth century for baroque violin and Dutch clog violin\, juxtaposing folk and art music from the early baroque. \nAntoinette Lohmann (Amsterdam\, 1969) is no stranger to South African audiences – she came to South Africa in 2008 for the first time to teach a masterclass baroque violin\, and this marked the beginning of her regular visits to this country to support the development of its emerging historical performance movement. She has been working together with South-Africa’s leading specialists in historical performance such as John Coulter\, Erik Dippenaar\, Hans Huyssen and Gerhard Benade. She has performed with Camerata Tinta Baroca and Cape Consort (Cape Town)\, Baroque 2000 (Durban). Furthermore she has been teaching masterclasses at the Universities of Cape Town\, Bloemfontein\, Potchefstroom and Pretoria. She is also an Honorary Patron of Camerata Tinta Barocca. She is currently teaching principal study historical violin and viola at the Amsterdam and the Utrecht Conservatory of Music and is also the principal teacher of the Historical Performance Department in Utrecht\, where she also teaches historical documentation. \nJörn Boysen (Lübeck\, 1976) is a harpsichordist\, conductor and composer. After his studies at the Musikhochschule Lübeck he went to the Netherlands where he studied with Tini Mathot and Ton Koopman at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He regularly performs in Germany\, the Netherlands\, France and at prominent European music festivals as guest conductor\, soloist or continuo player.  As composer\, Boysen has had works commissioned and performed by Musica Poetica (NL)\, De Nederlandse Bachverniging\, Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado (USA)\, soloists of Pratum Integrum (RU) and of the Berlin Philharmonics (D) and the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague (NL)\, amongst others. SUMMARY:I BASSIFONDI IN CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Istituto Italiano di Cultura’ in collaboration with Camerata Tinta Barocca present Italian ensemble I Bassifondi. A brainchild of Simone Vallerotonda\, I Bassifondi is a period ensemble performing music for lute\, archlute\, theorbo and baroque guitar with continuo. \nMost 17th-18th-century music for lute\, guitar\, theorbo and archlute was devised and written down to be played in consort with different instruments. Such authors as Kapsberger\, Corbetta\, Piccinini\, de Visée\, Granata\, Weiss and many others either composed their solo pieces with an added continuo accompaniment or arranged them from the original tablatures into regular multi-part scores. Moreover\, in some more explicit instances they wrote directly for a consort of lutes\, or for lute and sundry instruments. Several period chronicles witness on how such multi-instrumental music used to be performed. Guitarists were typically expected to be accompanied by theorboes\, colasciones\, lutes – and vice versa. Relying on written testimonies as well as on musical and iconographic sources\, the ensemble I Bassifondi founded and handpicked by Simone Vallerotonda\, aims at rediscovering and offering the audience that repertoire in chamber format. \nThe programme for this concert evokes the musical life of seventeenth century Rome in all its aspects: from the street\, where the storytellers improvised simple dances\, to the oratorio\, where people gathered to hear the sacrae historiae\, to the refined performances at the Palazzo Barberini. DESCRIPTION:In this concert Camerata Tinta Barocca will feature award-winning Canadian early music specialist Matthias Maute as recorder soloist. Maute is the Artistic Director of the Montreal-based ‘Ensemble Caprice’ and the Co-Artistic Director of the Montreal Baroque Festival (see full biography below). \nThe programme will feature works by Vivaldi and Zipoli\, amongst others. \nHere’s a short snippet of Maute’s recorder arrangement of Bach’s harpsichord concerto BWV1052 : \n\n  \nDate: Wednesday 11 November \nTime: 20:00 – 22:00 \nVenue: St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church\, De Waterkant \nTickets: R170 (at the door). \nEnquiries: info@ctbaroque.co.za \n  \nMatthias Maute   \nAward-winning conductor\, composer\, recorder and flute soloist Matthias Maute has achieved an international reputation. In 2016 he was named artistic director of the Bach Society of Minnesota and in 2019 of the professional choir Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec. Impressed by his artistic approach\, The New York Times described the orchestra he conducts in Montreal\, Ensemble Caprice\, as being “an ensemble that encourages the listener to rehear the world.” \nMaute’s recording of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos juxtaposed with Maute’s own arrangements of Preludes from Shostakovich’s Op. 87 was hailed by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross as standing out “for its fleet\, characterful approach” and “its fresh\, vibrant colors”. \nMatthias won the 1st Prize of the International Early Music Competition in Bruges (Belgium) as recorder soloist and has been touring the world ever since. \nHis compositions are published by Breitkopf & Härtel\, Amadeus\, Moeck\, and Carus. Maute’s 1st violin concerto was performed by soloist Mark Fewer with the St. John’s Symphony and with I Musici de Montréal. Forty-nine movements of Matthias Maute’s compositions are featured in 49 videos on noncerto.com. \nMatthias Maute has made some twenty recordings on the Analekta\, Vanguard Classics\, Bella Musica\, Dorian\, Bridge\, and ATMA Classique labels. He is regularly invited to perform at major international festivals. Matthias Maute is co-artistic director of the Montreal Baroque Festival and artistic director of the Méénat Musica Concerts noncerto concert series. He currently teaches at l’Université de Montréal and McGill University.

DESCRIPTION:Camerata Tinta Barocca (CTB) presents a concert of chamber music from the Baroque\, featuring Lynelle Kenned (soprano)\, Ralitza Macheva and Annien Shaw (baroque violins)\, Joshua Frank (recorder)\, Bridget Rennie-Salonen (baroque flute)\, Uwe Grosser (theorbo)\, and directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar. \nThe programme explores the possibilities of juxtaposing movements from works by a diversity of composers and from different genres\, by grouping them together in suites or partitas\, a common practice during the Baroque period. \nThe programme includes music by Bach\, Barsanti\, Geminiani\, Handel\, Hotteterre and Merula\, and is performed on period instruments by members of CTB. \nPlease keep in mind that for all live events current restrictions allow for 100 audience members in the Endler Hall and all safety protocols outlined by the University will be strictly followed. However\, another cycle of four recorder concertos with descriptive titles by the same composer has remained in (relative) obscurity\, namely: \n\nConcerto La Francia (France)\nConcerto La Spagna (Spain)\nConcerto L’Inghilterro (England)\nConcerto Il Gran Mogol (India)\n\nThe three concertos La Francia\, La Spagna\, L’Inghilterro and the original version of Il Gran Mogul are unfortunately lost. \nThe Cape Town Baroque Orchestra is happy to present Matthias Maute’s reconstruction of these four concerti\, with the virtuoso Maute himself as soloist. SUMMARY:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival (CTBF)
DESCRIPTION:2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival\nREVELATIONS!\n \nThe annual Cape Town Baroque Festival\, presented by the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, will take place from 21 to 24 September 2024. \nThe programming of the 2024 Cape Town Baroque Festival – titled Revelations! – revolves around the idea of concealing and revealing\, which permeates the individual programmes on many different levels. \nIn the award winning ‘Variations’ programme (Event 1) the focus is on sets of variations or divisions that are built on thematic material originating from songs or hymns. Often the elaborations on the themes in these compositions became so intricate that the encoded themes were obscured\, and are not recognisable on first hearing. These layers will be revealed in a very expressive way in the programme! \nIn a very exciting\, and possibly first South African\, performance of French allegorical late 17th century mini-opera ‘Les arts florissants’ by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (Event 2)\, we explore the idea of a first live hearing of a historical piece presented to a modern audience: early music experienced as new music. This also serves as a reminder that during the Baroque period works were not so often re-performed as in modern-day concert practice\, and that audiences were mostly exposed to newly composed works during concerts. In the opera\, the characters Music\, Poetry\, Painting and Architecture resolve a dispute between Peace and Discord. \nThe ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme (Event 3) will focus on Vivaldi and the performances at the Ospedale della Pietà\, where the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. This obscuring of the performers added a level of mystery to these performances\, which contributed to it becoming a very popular tourist attraction during the 18th century. In this hòmage to Louis XIV (self-styled arts patron\, warlord and ultimate monarch)\, ‘the arts’ are the characters: ‘La Musique’ (Music)\, ‘La Poèsie’ (Poetry)\, ‘La Peinture’ (Painting) and ‘L’Architecture’ (Architecture) resolve a dispute between ‘La Paix’ (Peace) and ‘La Discord’ (Discord). Soloists include Lynelle Kenned (soprano) and William Berger (baritone). SUMMARY:Event 3: Venice\, Vivaldi and the Ospedale della Pietà
DESCRIPTION:The Ospedale della Pietà was an orphanage-convent in Venice that was one of four so-called “Ospedali Grandi” (charitable hospices\, which provided a wide range of services for the needy of Venice). In these institutions\, music played an important part in the education of the inhabitants (all girls in the case of the Ospedale della Pietà). By the 18th century\, the Ospedale della Pietà was well-known for its all-female ensemble of singers and instrumentalists\, and the music performances attracted visitors and tourists from across Europe. Vivaldi first became involved with the Pietà as violin teacher in 1703 and held various positions at this institution during his lifetime\, notably between 1723 to 1740. Much of Vivaldi’s sacred vocal and instrumental music was written for performance at the Ospedale della Pietà. \n‘I have not an idea of anything so voluptuous and affecting as this music; the richness of the art\, the exquisite taste of the vocal part\, the excellence of the voices\, the justness of the execution\, everything in these delightful concerts concurs to produce an impression which certainly is not the mode\, but from which I am of opinion no heart is secure.’ – Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s description from 1770 of music-making at the Ospedale della Pietà \nFrom other accounts we know that the performers were situated in the loft of the chapel of the Ospedale della Pietà and was partially hidden behind metal grilles. For the ‘Venice\, Vivaldi\, and the Ospedale della Pietà’ programme\, the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra will present a selection of works that were written for\, and performed at\, the Ospedale della Pietà\, as well as works by Vivaldi’s Venetian contemporaries\, with all the musicians on the lofts of the SA Sendinggestig Museum in 40 Long Street\, Cape Town. \nCome get a sense of what music making in bustling Venice during Vivaldi’s lifetime might have sounded like\, and join us in paying homage to the mostly unacknowledged women and girls who were the musicians in the Ospedale della Pietà. \nWith: Ingo Müller (baroque oboe)\, Elsabé Richter (soprano)\, Lusibalwethu Sesanti (mezzo-soprano/drag artist)\, The Cape Town Baroque Trio\, Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, directed from the harpsichord by Erik Dippenaar \nProgramme duration:\n60 minutes (without interval). DESCRIPTION:After the first performances of Messiah in Dublin in 1742\, Handel performed the oratorio several times more during his lifetime. For each of these performances\, he adjusted the work according to the singers and instrumentalists available to him – a common practice during the baroque period.  Following the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s (CTBO) reconstruction of the first 1742 Dublin performance at the end of last year\, we will present the work again in November 2024\, this time featuring several of the alternative (and not often heard) versions of arias and choruses. CTBO’s Artistic Director\, Erik Dippenaar\, has specifically selected versions of the arias and recitatives which will position the three soprano soloists as narrators\, guiding the unfolding of the dramatic arch of this oratorio. \nAccording to CTBO’s usual practice\, the orchestra will play on period-appropriate instruments\, consisting of period stringed instruments\, chamber organ\, harpsichord\, theorbo\, baroque oboe\, baroque trumpet\, and calfskin baroque timpani. DESCRIPTION:BACK DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND! \nThese two performances are repeats of our award-winning and previously sold-out Variations programme. A popular genre during the baroque period was so-called ‘sets of variations’ or ‘divisions’: Composers often wrote variations and embellishments on songs\, folk melodies or hymns. Members of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra\, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin)\, Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord) and Lynelle Kenned (soprano) present a programme of expressive sets of variations from the baroque\, including music by Corelli\, Caccini\, Byrd\, Philips and Handel. The programme also includes newly composed sets of variations for solo violin by Montreal-based composer and early music specialist Matthias Maute\, as well as a piece by South African composer Arthur Feder. \nThis programme was recently awarded a kykNET Fiësta Award for best classical music production at an arts festival in South Africa in 2023\, and was performed to great acclaim at the 2024 Montreal Baroque Music Festival in Canada. \nTwo performances will be held on 1 February\, at 11:00-12:00 and 13:00-14:00 respectively\, to accommodate more concertgoers. The performances will take place at the intimate and atmospheric Weltevreden chapel\, originally a farmhouse dating from 1790 that was restored by local harpsichord maker William Selway (Bill) Robson.
